This third installment of Founder Lall Singh’s recent visit to Malkainia demonstrates how a simple act of kindness really can make such a difference and touch the hearts of strangers.
Delivering mail to Laxmi!
Longtime friends of mine and supporters of Wings for Little Minds are Roy and Brenda who are sponsoring a little girl called Laxmi Rajaram from the neighbouring village of Basganou, they asked me if I would take a letter to Laxmi during my visit. How could I refuse such a thoughtful gesture?!
Roy and Brenda had written a brief letter, together with a photo of their family and some pocket money which I sealed securely in an envelope.
When I arrived in Basganou asking for Laxmi, news had spread and soon half of the village turned up asking what was in the mystery envelope and wanting to know more!
I explained that it was a letter for Laxmi from her guardian angels in the UK and that it was private, for her to open in her home, alone.
I was there for about 20 minutes when Laxmi’s mother arrived intrigued but still I did not let go of the letter.
Eventually Laxmi turned up and I delivered her mail personally. As you can imagine, she proudly took her letter and soon disappeared indoors eager to see what was inside.
I was so engrossed in my quest that I had not noticed, but by the time I was ready to leave, I swear the whole village had turned up!
Read all about it!
Eventually the story was captured by a reporter of The Hindustan Times of India, who published the event with a summary of the whole charity project (see the full article on page 2).
The generosity of strangers
A few days later the reporter, Mr Jaiswal, called me and said an old retired engineer (70) now living in a sanctuary called him having read his article and asked if the charity will accept 500INR (approx. £5.70) per month as a donation for the rest of his life.
This really touched me as I am 71 and a retired engineer. I must admit I felt a lump in my throat. It just goes to show that generosity is contagious!
